Meet Engy Sutherland
Trustee Candidate
My name is Engy Sutherland and I am running for York Township Trustee. I am running because I am dedicated to bringing ethical and effective leadership to local government. I believe the township plays a vital role in supporting its most vulnerable residents, including seniors, children, and those facing hardships. At a time of economic uncertainty, I am committed to ensuring taxpayer know their tax dollars are spent wisely to enhance township services.

Engy's Story
Engy Sutherland is a dedicated community leader, longtime Chicago-area resident, and experienced professional running for York Township Trustee. She and her husband Jason moved to Elmhurst in 2020, where they are raising their two young children, Alex and Nora. Engy volunteers at her children’s local public school at Hawthorne Elementary and is actively serving as the Treasurer and Assistant Troop Leader for her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. In this role, she helps instill values of citizenship, service, and compassion in the next generation, while managing the troop’s finances.

As a prior elected member of the Local School Council in Chicago for four years, she oversaw key responsibilities including principal hiring, school budgeting, and continuous improvement planning. She is a 2021 graduate of the Illinois Women’s Institute for Leadership, an organization to train Democratic women to run for elected office.

Engy is first generation Egyptian-American, and speaks both English and Arabic (Egyptian dialect), as well as a touch of French. She grew up in unincorporated Maine Township near Des Plaines, and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelors of Science in Actuarial Science, a field that combines mathematics, finance, and statistics.
Professionally, Engy is currently a Senior Actuary and Managing Director for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. She holds a Fellowship from the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and is a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). As an actuarial professional, her expertise spans financial planning and analysis, projecting and forecasting trends, assessing risks, and evaluating legislative and policy impacts. Financial stewardship is part of her background which makes her uniquely qualified to serve as York Township Trustee.

In addition, Engy’s volunteer work reflects her dedication to making a positive impact. She has tutored and mentored high school students through HighSight, taught financial literacy to seniors through Junior Achievement, and paired with young readers through WITS (Working in the Schools). She helped pack food for the Chicago Food Depository, cleaned and organized clothes for Cradles to Crayons, and supported other nonprofits such as Heartland Alliance, an organization to fight poverty.
